Open and click tracking: turning it on and how it is counted
Tracking is decided per campaign under Settings → Delivery; opens use an invisible pixel, clicks rewrite links through the tracking domain, and every recorded open counts, while a click counts only 5 minutes or more after sending, so mail-security scanners don't inflate the clicks.
Where: Campaigns → campaign → Settings → Delivery tab ("Tracking & providers"): Plain-text mode, Track opens, Track clicks. Settings → Tracking also shows Open tracking / Click tracking On/Off switches, but they do not change what any campaign sends — only the campaign's Delivery switches do.
How to do it
- Open the campaign, click the Settings tab, then Delivery.
- Switch Plain-text mode off. While it is on, Track opens and Track clicks are greyed out with the notes "Turn off plain-text mode to enable open tracking." / "…click tracking." Turning Plain-text mode on switches both trackers off.
- Switch on Track opens ("Invisible pixel to see who opened — adds an HTML pixel to the email.").
- Optionally switch on Track clicks ("Rewrites links through a tracking domain — hurts deliverability, off is safer.").
- Save. Every email sent from now on is tracked; emails already sent are not.
- Read the results on the campaign's Analytics tab (Unique Opens and Clicks tiles, Sequence Breakdown per step and A/B variant), on the Campaigns list (Opened and Clicked columns), on the campaign's Emails tab (filter chips All, Opened, Not opened, Clicked, Replied, Bounced, Blocked; eye and pointer icons per email), and on Leads via the Engagement filter "Opened".
Good to know
- Defaults for a new campaign: Plain-text mode on (marked Recommended), Track opens off, Track clicks off.
- What counts: every open recorded on an email that arrived, and a click 5 minutes or more after the email was sent. Mail-security scanners open the pixel and follow every link the moment an email is delivered: their opens count like any other, so read opens as a rough signal, while their clicks in the first 5 minutes are left out of every click number and rate — the Campaigns list, Analytics, the Emails tab and Reports. A person who clicks after a scanner still counts from their own click. An email that bounced or was blocked never counts as opened or clicked. Hover Clicked on the Campaigns list for the count including the automatic clicks.
- Click tracking turns bare web addresses and text links in the email into links through the tracking domain, e.g. https://fltrk.com/t/c/…; the recipient is redirected to the real destination. Links point to the stored destination by position, so a tracking link can never be rewritten to send someone elsewhere.
- A click is recorded — and fires the "Link clicked" webhook — only when it looks human: at least 5 seconds after the recorded open, or, when no open was recorded (images blocked), at least 90 seconds after the email was sent. Anything faster is treated as a security scanner fetching every link on delivery and is ignored. In the numbers a click counts only 5 minutes or more after sending (an open counts whenever it is recorded), and every recorded click also counts as an open.
- Requests from known bots, crawlers, link-preview fetchers and mail-security scanners (and requests with no browser identification) are ignored for both opens and clicks. Apple Mail Privacy Protection cannot be told apart from a person — it can load the pixel for someone who never read the email — so read opens as a rough signal.
- The tracking image and links use your workspace's custom tracking domain when one is saved under Settings → Tracking, otherwise MailFleet's shared domain fltrk.com. Each workspace's links always use its own domain.
- On the Campaigns list the Opened and Clicked columns show "—" for a campaign with that tracker off (hover: "Open tracking is off for this campaign" / "Click tracking is off for this campaign").
- The workspace-level Open tracking / Click tracking switches under Settings → Tracking (defaults: On / Off) are saved with your settings, but what actually goes into an email is decided by each campaign's own Delivery switches — check those if the numbers are not what you expect.
- An opened, clicked or replied lead can be handed from an email campaign into a LinkedIn campaign that uses it as its source; the triggers are chosen on that campaign. The hand-off, condition steps and the Email opened / Link clicked webhooks act on every open and click that gets past the bot filter, including clicks in the first 5 minutes — the 5-minute rule for clicks applies to the reported numbers only.
- The campaign Leads tab export (CSV) includes opened / clicked as yes/no plus opened_at and clicked_at timestamps, counted the same way: any recorded open, and a click 5 minutes or more after sending, on an email that arrived.
Questions people ask
Why are opens and clicks equal, or why did someone "click" seconds after delivery?
That is a mail-security scanner opening every link the moment the email arrives. A click in the first 5 minutes after sending is left out of the numbers, so those bursts don't count as Clicked (hover Clicked on the Campaigns list for the count including them); the scanner's open counts as Opened, like every recorded open.
Why is my open rate lower than other tools show?
An email that bounced or was blocked never counts as opened — a block notice often quotes the email, so its pixel loads in your own inbox and other tools count that as an open — and on the Campaigns list Opened is emails opened out of every email sent, follow-ups included. Every other recorded open counts, including the automatic ones mail-security scanners make on delivery, and Apple Mail Privacy Protection can load the pixel for a person who never read the email, so read opens as a rough signal and reply rate as the real one.
Does turning tracking on change how the email looks?
The pixel is invisible. With click tracking on, the link destinations become tracking-domain URLs (the visible text stays as written). Plain-text mode must be off, so the email goes out as HTML paragraphs.
Should I turn on click tracking?
Only if you need the data. Rewritten links are a known spam signal; MailFleet's own note says off is the safer default. If you do, use a custom tracking domain on a domain you own.
