Unsubscribes: how people opt out and what happens
People can opt out via the unsubscribe line in your emails, the one-click button their mail app shows, or simply by replying "not interested" — all three suppress them everywhere automatically.
Where: Campaign → Settings → Protection → "Unsubscribe line in every email" · Leads → Suppressed · Settings → Blocklist → Blocked people · Replies (intent: Unsubscribe)
How to do it
- Keep "Unsubscribe line in every email" on (default) under Campaign Settings → Protection. Edit the Unsubscribe line text if you like — default: "Not the right person? Reply “no thanks” and I'll stop." It is appended in small type to every step followed by an Unsubscribe link.
- Nothing else to set up: every campaign email also carries a one-click List-Unsubscribe header, so Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook can show their own Unsubscribe button.
- When someone clicks the link they see "Unsubscribe?" with a button; clicking it shows "You've been unsubscribed". Only that click (or the mail app's one-click) unsubscribes — link scanners opening the page cannot.
- A reply that reads as an opt-out or rejection ("unsubscribe", "remove me", "not interested", "no thanks", "stop emailing", "we're all set", "wrong person"…) is detected automatically and the person is unsubscribed from every campaign.
- Review them under Leads → Suppressed or Settings → Blocklist → Blocked people; click Unblock there to bring someone back to New if it was a mistake.
Good to know
- Effect of an unsubscribe: lead status becomes Unsubscribed, their active or paused enrolments stop, Last activity reads "Unsubscribed" (link) or "Not interested — removed from all campaigns" (reply), and a lead.unsubscribed webhook fires.
- An unsubscribe applies across all your campaigns, not just the one that sent the email.
- Out-of-office and automatic replies never count as "not interested", even if they contain a stop-word.
- Unsubscribed people are excluded from every list and from All leads, are skipped when a list is enrolled, and keep their status if re-imported from a CSV (the import updates their details but never revives them).
- The visible line can be turned off per campaign, but the one-click header is always sent — it is required by Gmail, Yahoo and Microsoft for bulk senders.
- Manually tagging a reply as Not interested or setting its intent to Unsubscribe does not by itself unsubscribe the lead; use Block on the reply to stop them everywhere.
Questions people ask
Someone unsubscribed by accident — how do I resume them?
Settings → Blocklist → Blocked people → Unblock. They return to New and can be enrolled again from their list.
Will an unsubscribed person be added again if I import a new CSV containing them?
They are matched by email and stay Unsubscribed; the import only updates their fields.
