Sequence step types (email, manual, call, LinkedIn)
What each step type in a Multi Channel or LinkedIn sequence does and which settings it has.
Where: Multi Channel wizard → 02 Sequence, or the LinkedIn campaign editor → 02 Sequence → palette "Add To The Sequence" and the step panel on the right (step type, wait, per-type fields, Delete Step, Duplicate)
How to do it
- Automated Email — sends on its own from one of the campaign's mailboxes. Fields: Subject (leave empty to stay in the same thread), Body, and the checkbox "Add the mailbox signature when this step sends" (on by default; off sends the copy exactly as written).
- Manual Email — MailFleet drafts the email and opens a task in Tasks for you to review and send. Same Subject / "Draft — you send it" body / signature checkbox.
- Phone Call — opens a call task in Tasks with the lead's number and your Call script filled with their details.
- LinkedIn · View Profile — the account visits the lead's profile (a warm-up touch). Nothing is sent.
- LinkedIn · Connect — sends a connection request with an optional note of up to 300 characters. In the LinkedIn editor the "Add a note" switch turns the note off without losing what you wrote.
- LinkedIn · Message — sends a direct message (up to 8,000 characters) once the lead is connected — right away for people who are already connections.
- Condition — branches on what the lead has done (see the Condition article).
- Reorder with ▲ ▼ (↑ ↓ in the LinkedIn editor), use Duplicate to copy a step, Delete Step to remove it, and the step type picker to change a step's kind — timing and any text that still applies are carried over.
Good to know
- Variables: {{first_name}}, {{last_name}}, {{company}}, {{title}}, {{city}}, {{country}}, {{industry}}, {{website}} plus your imported custom fields. Write {{first_name|there}} to fall back when a field is empty and {Hi|Hey} to pick one at random. The LinkedIn composer's "{ } Variable" menu inserts at the cursor.
- A variable that is empty for a lead and has no fallback never leaves a gap in LinkedIn text: the invite goes without its note, and a Message step is skipped for that lead ("Skipped step N — missing <field>"), as an email step is.
- LinkedIn notes and messages support A/B: press "A/B" to add up to three alternative versions (four in total, A–D). Each lead is assigned one version consistently; the composer shows the rough share (e.g. "Version B · 50% of leads"). Empty versions are ignored.
- "Preview" renders the note or message with a real lead from the chosen list or source campaign ("Next →" cycles through samples) and lists fields that are empty for that lead.
- Waits: in the Multi Channel wizard each later step has "Starts after previous step" in days (0–60). In the LinkedIn editor the wait is a number of Days, Weeks or Months (a month is 30 days), 90 days at most, and a Message whose nearest earlier LinkedIn step is a Connect — earlier Messages and Conditions in between don't count — goes only once the invite is accepted: the first Message after the Connect counts its wait from the acceptance ("Wait after they accept"), a later one from the previous step ("Wait after previous step — goes only once they've accepted"). The first step always runs as soon as a lead enters.
- In LinkedIn campaigns only LinkedIn steps and Condition are offered; in Multi Channel all seven appear (LinkedIn steps and accounts only if LinkedIn is enabled for your workspace).
- Manual Email and Phone Call steps show a "Creates a task" tag on the canvas. Tasks created from the Multi Channel wizard are due immediately (there is no due-window field here; the email campaign builder's manual/call steps have one).
- Automated emails in these campaigns use the same mailbox rotation, threading, tracking and A/B rules as email campaigns; a bounce or unsubscribe removes the lead as usual.
