Paths: different steps for people who open, connect or don't
Send LinkedIn only to people who opened your email, message the ones who connect, email the ones who don't — and move anyone who connects later over to the connected steps.
Where: Multi Channel wizard → 02 Sequence → palette "Split" (or + between steps → "Split: different steps when…"); on a LinkedIn step, "Send this only if they…"
How to do it
- Start with your first email on Main — everyone starts there.
- Add a Split after it and pick "opened an email", wait up to 3 days. Opened → Carry on; Didn't open → New path… (or End the sequence).
- Add your LinkedIn invite after the split, then another Split: it suggests "accepted your invite", 7 days, with Not connected on a new path and "If they accept later, move them to Connected" ticked.
- Set Connected to New path… and add a LinkedIn message (1 day after they accept) and an email for anyone who doesn't reply.
- Add the emails for people who don't connect on the Not connected path.
- If the split says open tracking is off, press Turn on open tracking (read the note about delivery first), then Save.
Good to know
- Answers are named for what they check — Opened / Didn't open, Clicked / Didn't click, Connected / Not connected — and each goes to Carry on (the next step on this path), a path, or End the sequence.
- Opens, clicks and acceptances count as soon as we see them; the other answer is taken when the wait is over. Before taking Not connected we check LinkedIn once more, so an acceptance that just happened isn't missed.
- "If they accept later, move them to Connected": someone still on Not connected (or a path below it) who accepts later moves to the Connected answer once, and isn't sent the rest of Not connected. We keep checking for 60 days after the invite. Anyone who replied or finished stays where they are.
- The first email has to be a step of the same Multi Channel campaign.
- Opened and Clicked checks need tracking on, which switches your emails from plain text to HTML with a small tracking image and can lower delivery on new mailboxes. Automatic opens by email security tools don't count; a click counts as an open.
- If an invite can't be sent — no LinkedIn profile after 3 days, or no active LinkedIn account for 7 days — the accepted check answers Not connected ("No invite was sent").
- A reply, an unsubscribe or a bounce stops the person on every path.
- Up to 6 paths and 24 steps in all. Each path follows exactly one answer, so nobody gets a step twice.
Questions people ask
Can I send LinkedIn only to people who opened?
Yes. On the LinkedIn step choose Send this only if they… → opened an email. People who didn't open end there, or give them a path of their own on the check.
What happens if they accept my invite later?
With "If they accept later, move them to Connected" ticked, they move to the Connected steps the moment we see it (we keep checking for 60 days after the invite), and the rest of Not connected isn't sent.
Can I change a running campaign?
Yes. Everyone keeps their step. If people are on a step you delete, you're told how many and where they go before you save.
