Garfield Research: find new people with a work email
Describe who you want and Garfield counts the matching people for free, then pulls as many as you ask for WITH a work email at their current company into the Garfield Research tab — or upload a list of company websites and Garfield finds the titles you want at each one. One credit per person delivered with an email; people without one are kept free.
Where: Lead Database → "Describe who you want" box → Research (next to Find leads) · Lead Database → Upload a company list · Lead Database → Garfield Research tab (People / Companies / Garfield Research)
How to do it
- Open Lead Database and type who you want into "Describe who you want", in your own words: job titles, seniority, department, industry, company size, what the company does, and where the people are based. For example "Heads of operations at UK logistics companies with 50–200 staff". Up to 2,000 characters.
- Click Research (next to Find leads). Garfield reads your description, works out the titles, industries and places, and counts the matching people. This takes a few seconds and is free.
- Read the Research card: what Garfield understood (one line, plus a chip for each filter such as Titles, Seniority, Industry, Company size, Based in), any assumptions it made, and "About N people match". If nothing matched everything you asked for, Garfield loosens one thing at a time and says which (the company size, revenue or founding year, then the industry — first to its wider category — then excluded titles, seniority or department; never your job titles, company keywords or places). Change the description and click Research again to try another search.
- Under "How many leads with a work email?" type how many you want (up to 10,000 in one pull, and no more than the credits you have left this month), then click Pull leads. The card shows your credits, for example "4,200 of 5,000 Garfield Research credits left this month".
- The page switches to the Garfield Research tab and shows the pull's progress: Understood your description ✓, Counted N matching people ✓, then Finding people and their work emails, with a bar and a line like "340 of 1,000 found · 1,280 people checked · 610 had no work email · 12 you already had". You can leave the page — Garfield keeps going. Cancel, then Stop pull, stops it and gives back the credits it didn't use.
- When it finishes, the tab lists the people it found. Pick a pull in the list of your pulls to see just that one, and filter With email / No email / All. Each row shows the name, title, company, location, the work email (or a No email tag) and a LinkedIn link; "In your leads" marks someone you already had, and "Added" someone you've added to a list from here.
- Tick people and click Add to list (an existing list, or a new one, named "Garfield Research — <date>" unless you change it), or click "Add all with an email from this pull". Then use the list in any campaign as usual.
- Click Export CSV to download everyone a pull found, including the people without an email (garfield-research.csv).
- To find titles at companies you already have: on the Lead Database page click Upload a company list (next to "Describe who you want", or the button in the Garfield Research tab). Drop or choose a CSV with a column of company websites — CSV only; from Excel or Google Sheets, save or download it as .csv first — or paste websites, one per line. A list can hold as many companies as you have left this month (see below), up to 10,000.
- Check what Garfield read: the column the websites are in (pick another if it guessed wrong), how many companies are ready, and what it skipped and why (no website, not a website, an email provider such as gmail.com, a social or link page, the same company twice, past the 10,000 limit). The card also shows "Companies this month: X of N left"; if your list has more companies than that, it says so — "You can check N more companies this month — your plan allows M a month. It resets on the 1st." — and Garfield checks the first N companies, in the order they're listed.
- Type the titles to find, separated by commas, for example "CEO, Founder, Owner". Add a fallback group if you like (for example "Head of Sales, VP Sales"): Garfield looks for the first group at each company first, and moves to the next when the first doesn't give enough people with a work email. Up to 5 groups.
- With "Let Garfield add common variants" on, click Show the variants: Garfield adds short variants of your titles as chips. Remove any you don't want, or add your own. Leave out skips people with those words in their title (assistant and intern to start with); Only people based in limits it to the countries you pick.
- Pick people per company: 1 (the best match, the default) up to 5. Read the credits line — "Up to N credits (companies × people per company) — you only use credits for people Garfield finds a work email for" — then click Find people.
- The Garfield Research tab shows the list's progress ("Checking companies — 340 of 1,200 · 210 with a match · 180 people with a work email · 95 companies with nobody matching · 35 websites we couldn't place"). When you pick the list, the Companies view shows one row per company with its status and the people found there, and the People view is the usual table with Add to list. Export CSV gives back your own list's columns plus Status, First Name, Last Name, Title, Work Email and LinkedIn URL.
Good to know
- Credits a month: Basic and the 7-day trial 1,000, Pro 5,000, Scale 50,000. They reset on the 1st of each month (UTC) and don't roll over. They're separate from your Lead Database allowance and from your room for leads. See them under Billing → Credits ("Garfield Research credits") and on the Research card.
- One credit = one person delivered with a work email at the company they work for now. Counting is free, people Garfield finds no work email for are free, and people already in your leads (the same LinkedIn profile or the same name at the same company — recognised before Garfield looks for their email, so it moves on to someone new — or the same email) or pulled before in this workspace are free and not delivered again.
- Credits are set aside when a pull starts, so two pulls can't spend the same credits, and whatever isn't delivered is given back when the pull ends: when you cancel it, when Garfield has found everyone in the search with a work email ("That's everyone Garfield could find with a work email for this search."), or when it stops early because few people in the search have a work email it can find ("…try a broader description.").
- Not everyone has a work email Garfield can find (often around half of the people in a search), so a pull checks more people than it delivers. "About N people match" counts everyone who matches, with or without an email, so a pull of N people with an email may not be possible from a search of N. Pull more on a finished pull asks for more from the same search, as long as there are people left in it.
- People without an email are kept in the tab (No email filter) with their LinkedIn link and are in the CSV export. They can't be added to a list, because every MailFleet lead needs an email address.
- Adding people to a list makes them leads, so they take room in your workspace like any lead (Basic and the trial 2,000, Pro 30,000, Scale unlimited) and don't use your Lead Database allowance. Blocklisted or unsubscribed addresses, people already in your leads and people without an email are skipped and reported; when your workspace is full, as many as fit are added and the rest are reported as not added.
- Work emails come from MailFleet's data partners and aren't checked live the way a Lead Database reveal is. On Pro and Scale, run the list through email verification before a big send, as you would with any new list.
- One pull runs at a time in each workspace; a second one waits its turn and starts on its own. A pull that has to wait (Garfield Research is busy, or taking a short break) carries on automatically, and nothing is charged for the wait.
- When your plan has lapsed: "Your plan has lapsed — Garfield Research is paused. Renew under Billing to continue." When this month's credits are used: "You've used this month's N Garfield Research credits. They reset on the 1st — or upgrade under Billing for more."
- Credits belong to the workspace, and anyone in the workspace can run a search or a pull. If you belong to several workspaces, each has its own credits.
- Garfield Research only searches for people. It never emails anyone, and nothing you pull goes into a campaign until you add it to a list and use that list.
- Company lists: one credit per person delivered with a work email at that company. People without one, companies where nobody has the titles, and websites Garfield can't find online use no credits (each still counts toward the month's companies). The best match is the highest-ranked person with a work email there: if the top match has no email, Garfield tries the next one before giving up on the company.
- Company lists also count the companies Garfield checks, each calendar month: Basic and the 7-day trial 500, Pro 2,000, Scale 10,000. They reset on the 1st (UTC), don't roll over, and are separate from your Garfield Research credits. A company counts once Garfield has checked it, whatever it found — people with a work email, no work email, nobody with those titles, or a website it couldn't find online — and a company Garfield tried but couldn't check counts too. The companies are set aside when the list starts, and the ones it never reaches (you cancelled it, or the credits ran out first) are given back when it ends. See them under Billing → Credits ("Company list companies"), on the upload card and in the Garfield Research tab ("Companies this month: X of N left").
- A list holds at most the companies you have left this month, and never more than 10,000. If you upload more, Garfield keeps the first ones, in the order they're listed, and says plainly how many were left out: "You can check N more companies this month — your plan allows M a month. It resets on the 1st." When none are left: "You've checked this month's M companies. Company lists reset on the 1st — or upgrade under Billing for more." When your plan has lapsed, company lists are paused until it renews.
- If you have fewer credits than companies × people per company, the card says how many companies they cover at least (often more, since people without an email are free), and you can start anyway: Garfield works down your list in order and stops cleanly when the credits run out. Credits not used are given back when the list ends.
- A company list's CSV export keeps every column from your file and adds Status, First Name, Last Name, Title, Work Email and LinkedIn URL: one row for each person found, and one row with just the status for each company where nobody was found. Cells that start with =, +, - or @ are written so a spreadsheet won't run them.
- Garfield always searches fresh for a company list. One pull or company list runs at a time in each workspace; another waits its turn and starts on its own.
- Leads → Enrich uses the same credits: 1 Garfield credit for each phone number, email or LinkedIn profile Garfield finds for leads you already have (nothing for a miss). See "Enrich your leads".
Questions people ask
Do I pay for people Garfield can't find an email for?
No. You only use a credit for each person delivered with a work email at their current company. People without one are kept in the tab, free, with their LinkedIn link, and are included in the CSV export.
Does counting use credits?
No. Clicking Research and reading "About N people match" is free, however many times you change the description. Credits are only used when you click Pull leads, and only for people delivered with a work email.
I cancelled a pull. Do I get my credits back?
Yes. Credits are set aside when a pull starts; when it's cancelled or ends early, every credit it didn't use for a delivered person goes back to this month's credits straight away.
Why did my pull stop before it reached the number I asked for?
Either Garfield found everyone in that search who has a work email, or so few people in it had one that it stopped early to avoid checking people for nothing. Any credits not used were returned. Try a broader description (more job titles, fewer filters) and pull again.
Where does Garfield Research find people?
From MailFleet's data partners, which cover far more professionals than the Lead Database. MailFleet doesn't name them, and the people found are never contacted unless you add them to a list and email them.
Can I give Garfield my own list of companies?
Yes. On the Lead Database page click Upload a company list, choose a CSV with a column of company websites (or paste them, one per line), type the job titles you want in order of priority, and click Find people. Each month you can check 500 companies on Basic and the trial, 2,000 on Pro and 10,000 on Scale (one list holds up to what you have left, and never more than 10,000), with 1 to 5 people per company.
Can I upload an Excel file?
Not directly — company lists take CSV files. In Excel use File → Save As → CSV, or in Google Sheets File → Download → Comma-separated values, then upload that file. You can also paste the websites, one per line.
Do I pay for companies where Garfield finds nobody?
No. You only use a credit for each person delivered with a work email at that company. Companies where nobody has your titles, people without a work email and websites Garfield can't find online are all free.
How many companies can I check a month?
Basic and the 7-day trial 500, Pro 2,000, Scale 10,000 a calendar month, reset on the 1st. A company counts once Garfield has checked it, whatever it found (a company it tried but couldn't check counts too); companies a list never reaches (because you cancelled it, or your credits ran out first) are given back. Billing → Credits shows how many you've used ("Company list companies").
